Microwave Popcorn in a Paper Lunch Sack

Microwave Popcorn

Did you know you can make popcorn in your microwave oven in a plain paper bag like you see above?  I finally tried it a few months ago and I've been making ever since.  I've tweaked my method a bit here and there and experimented with different oils (coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil).  This is how I make my popcorn.

Measure a 1/4 of popcorn kernels into a brown paper bag (lunch sack).
Drizzle about 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil over the popcorn kernels.
Sprinkle in about 1 teaspoon of kosher salt.
Giggle the bag once or twice to mix it all up (probably not necessary but I feel compelled to do this.)
Fold over the top of the bag two times and fasten shut with a small piece of Scotch tape.
Place the paper bag on its side in the microwave oven on top of a paper towel or two (see below).
Set microwave for HIGH power (100 percent power) for 3 minutes ***; remove the popcorn from the microwave oven when the kernel popping slows down significantly.  Shake the bag a few times a few times when it comes out of the microwave oven and then tear open the bag (being careful of the steam); pour the popcorn into a bowl.  Enjoy!

*** NOTE: My popcorn is typically perfectly done 2 minutes and 30 seconds, but of course microwave ovens very significantly

I've heard you can make popcorn in the microwave oven in a bag without adding any oil. I have not tried that yet. I like adding a little oil so that some salt will stick to the popcorn.

Enjoy!
